Mother & daughter reunited
Earlier this year, “Sofia” was arrested by ICE and placed in detention, leaving behind her 16 year old daughter.
CIJF provided funding for two trusted attorneys to provide legal counsel for Sofia, and she was subsequently released from detention. This heart-warming photo was snapped after their joyful reunion.
Our creative legal strategy
As detention rates climb, we’ve pivoted toward a highly effective legal strategy: Habeas petitions. By filing these in federal court we are successfully challenging the legal basis of prolonged ICE detention, and reuniting immigrants with their families.
The results have been life-changing:
So far, we have funded 22 petitions.
Five of the petitions have been reviewed by federal judges, and all five were granted, including Sofia’s.
We recently filed 2 “group petitions” for 9 immigrants for $16,200 - just $1,800 per client. This return on investment is incredible as habeas cases typically cost $7,500 or more per client.
