Luisa wins her freedom!

“Luisa” (not her real name) fled life-threatening conditions in her Latin American home country, and was detained in Texas and then Aurora, Colorado.

A CIJF-funded attorney helped her win asylum last March, but the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appealed the decision, forcing Luisa to remain in detention.

A CIJF partner-attorney filed a habeas petition on Luisa’s behalf that resulted in a bond hearing. Her original CIJF attorney represented Luisa at the bond hearing, where she was granted bond and finally released.

The photo above was taken shortly after Luisa’s release from detention when she was reunited with her sister in Denver.

Luisa’s freedom was made possible by our generous donors, who we cannot thank enough!
